The North Texas Conference of The UMC is trying to clarify a calling we believe God is laying on our hearts. The initial indication is pointing to planting a new United Methodist church in Greenville.

Lent self-examination and reflection

The season before Easter, called Lent, is a time when Christians have an intentional “turn around” spot for our lives.

When we leave town, our comfort zone, for 8 days and give of ourselves — completely for the sake of others, a change occurs. When we become tired and weary, when we rely on the strength of one another and of God — discipline is discovered.

Prayer is a critical part of our discipleship growth. There are many prayer practices one may use or try. Reading a prayer written centuries ago can express deep human issues shared over many generations.

Over the past 10 years this time of year, I have heard of people speaking of the overcommercialization of Christmas, the “war on Christmas” and deriding the secular expressions of the Christmas holiday. I have to say I do not blame the companies, marketing teams or stores one bit. That is their job, to sell their products and services. Good for them. I also have to say, the media companies have a tough job to conduct business with Christians as well as people of other faiths. When they say “Happy Holidays” I hear “Happy Holy-days”. Good for them, that is their job to entertain a large swath of humanity. When I hear “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” on the radio more than “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” I change the station or put on the sacred Christmas Music I want to hear… but their job isn’t to share theologically appropriate … Read More

Special guests are on their way and we want to ensure we are well prepared for. Advent — the season of preparation before Christmas — is the time when we prepare for a very special guest to arrive. For over 1,500 years, Christians have practiced Advent (as we know it) and used it to examine … Read More

Hello Wesley! Two questions I have had lately: 1) How do people join Wesley nowadays? 2) Is the church addressing safety concerns in light of the Sutherland Springs violence? People wanting to know more about Wesley are invited to “Welcome to Wesley” offered the second Sunday of each month. Guests, a staff member, designated members and I gather at 4:00 pm to get to know each other as well as learn what participation at Wesley can look like for them. Guests who fill out a “Guest Registration Card” (Golden Rod slip in the pew rack) will receive invitations to participate. During Welcome to Wesley all are invited to tell how we discovered Wesley, share about our faith journey so far and talk about membership at Wesley. Childcare and light snacks are provided. After the one hour meeting a tour of the building will be offered. On the third Sunday of … Read More
